Why I love Percy Jackson and the Olympians.
1. Awesome premise.
2. Hilarious.
3. Loads of action.
Okay, here’s everything you need to know about Percy J. and the Olympians. The Greek gods and goddesses, like Zeus, Athena, those guys, are real. Mount Olympus, home of the Olympians, is a mythical mountain that travels with the heart of Western civilization. So, naturally, it’s now at the top of the Empire State Building. Percy, like the other kids at Camp Half Blood, is a demigod, or half-blood. In other words, one of his parents is mortal, the other’s a god. And, since the gods are real, the monsters from Greek mythology, like the manticore, cyclopes and more, are real, unkillable, and have an insatiable hunger for half-bloods. And why, you ask, can’t mortals see murderous minotaurs barreling down the highway or algebra teachers morphing into harpies? The answer is the Mist. Mortals are confused by it. So, instead of seeing Apollo riding through the sky in his sun convertible, they see a shooting star, or a really bright cloud. You get the picture.
At the outset of book three, Percy and his friends face a huge problem. The Titans, the people who came before the Olympians, are trying to make a comeback. Percy’s former friend, Luke, and his allies have retrieved the pieces of the Titan lord, Kronos, from the pit at Tartarus, and it’s only a matter of time before he’s able to regain physical form. Luke captures Percy’s friend, Annabeth, and the goddess Artemis, and, in order to rescue them, Percy must face immortal skeleton warriors, a metal giant, a manticore, and that’s just in the first half of the book.
This is a great series for reluctant readers, or, for that matter, voracious readers of all ages. I was a little disappointed with The Sea of Monsters, but I think Riordan gets right back on track with this third in a five-part series.
Still in doubt? Check out these awesome chapter titles.
The Vice Principal Gets a Missile Launcher
I Learn How to Grow Zombies
I Go Snowboarding with a Pig
I Wrestle Santa’s Evil Twin
We Meet the Dragon of Eternal Bad Breath
And if you don’t believe me, listen to what this gal thinks about the first book in the series, The Lightning Thief…
Check the author’s website after October 4, 2007 for the title of book 4 and a sneak peek. The release date for book 4 is May 6, 2008.
