Once again, laziness drove me to read the graphic novel version of a book that I’ve been meaning to read for ages. This time, it was Brian Jacques’ Redwall. I started the book a while back, but I never finished. Maybe because I was annoyed by the stupid Cluny the Scourge chapters, or maybe just because I suck (probably the latter). Either way, I was psyched when I saw the graphic novel version on the shelf at Borders.
The black and white illustrations are super cute, which fans of the series may or may not enjoy. For me, I liked the cute mice, and I thought the artist made Cluny thoroughly nasty looking. I can’t speak to the artist’s adherence to canon, but (if the back cover is to be believed) the book covers all of the major battles.
The main feeling I came away with after reading this graphic novel was a desire to read the actual novel. It was cool, but I couldn’t help but want more detail. Still, I enjoyed the book for what it was, and fans of the series will probably be glad they picked it up.

I’ve read all 17-18? Redwall books; most twice. He just keeps getting better. I began with Loamhedge, still my favorite. I suggest you start with that, Rakkety-Tam, Lord Brocktree — his later books are somewhat more sophisticated. Just ignore the formulaic plot parts–they don’t get in the way of the much larger and unique main plots of each book. (Actually sort of cozy.) Also each volume has completely new “tribes” or types of creatures, strange cultures, etc.
P.S. BTW, I’m 59, very literate–in fact a book snob. This is excellent writing. Oh–try a full-cast Redwall audiobook from iTunes.
