Beheading, dismemberment, feral vampires and suicidal werewolves. Like in the first two books, much of this third book in the Twilight Saga focuses on Bella’s inner turmoil (i.e. her choice between Edward and Jacob), but this time around Meyer does throw in some bone-ripping battle scenes–a major plus for those readers who could do without all the romance. The main action still moves at a snail’s pace. The Victoria and Volturi storylines are secondary to Bella’s struggle between eternally opposing forces: werewolf or vampire, life or death?
For those of you who have read my past not-so-shiny reviews of New Moon and Twilight, you may be asking yourselves: Why do you keep reading this stuff? What can I say? Morbid curiosity, I guess. Everyone keeps talking about how amazing these stories are, so I just want to find out for myself. And who knows? Maybe when I trudge off to Borders to buy Breaking Dawn on August 2nd, I’ll be pleasantly (and gorily) surprised?

Ironically, I’m in the middle of completely hammering “Twilight”. The books aren’t totally horrible, per say, but they’re just…eaten alive by plot holes and general Mary-Sue hijinks.
In short, I agree with you on the morbid curiosity. I keep thinking that the flaws will work themselves our and they never do, and yet, bizarrely, I go on reading them.

They’re not totally horrible? You could’ve fooled me
I’ve also been tempted to read more of the trainwreck that is Twilight out of morbid curiosity, but I just can’t bring myself to do it.

I think the books have been hyped so much, that new readers expect too much out of them.
These books aren’t meant to be read in a philosophical or literary snobbish way. They are fun, light reads. Yes, some biblical and moral issues come up. It’s about vampires and werewolves, those issues always arise with these topics.
And for the “Mary Sue Hijinks”, it’s a work of fiction meant to entertain. Like any other piece of entertainment it’s going to have events that would never happen in “real life”. But isn’t that what we as readers want? I’m sorry, but if any “normal” persons everyday life was written about, it would be boring. You have to put little quirky details in there to make it interesting. O.K. I’m done ranting.
Team Edward!

It’s not that people expect them to high minded or philosophical, it’s that they’re written horrendously badly. Nobody expects a book about vampires to be realistic or anything, either, it’s just that a Mary Sue will kill pretty much any story.

I usually think about Mary Sue characters in relation to fan fic, but I see what you’re saying. The series is pretty much just one long (let me emphasize long) teenage wish-fulfillment fantasy. Bella and Edward do not have enough flaws to make the story interesting. Again, MAYBE, once Bella becomes a vampire she’ll breathe some more life into the story, but only time will tell

There really is something addictive about the series. I think they’re badly written books (little plot, lots of filler, flat characters), and some of the messages make me cringe, but they’re still quick, entertaining reads. Sparkling vampires. Hee.
